You Are Equipped for Change

“All that is behind you was in preparation for all that is set before you” – Lisa Bevere

As I experience a new level of change this season and step out into unknown territory, I am uncomfortable.

The road is uneven and rough at times, and I feel unsteady and unsure of how to navigate it.

I begin to question myself wondering if I can really do this, if I am really equipped to handle the task before me. I even find myself wanting to turn around and head back in the direction I came from, my safe place where I was confident and comfortable.

“All that is behind you was in preparation for all that is set before you” – Lisa Bevere

This quote really grabbed a hold of me this week. It reminded me, as I take on this new role of Executive Director of FTGI, I can know I am prepared for what is to come. And no matter how prepared we might be for the journey, fear and self-doubt creep in. But, courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s moving forward still, despite the questions we have and the uncertainty before us, and trusting we can do this.

I look at the woman in this picture as she stands looking out at the vast unclear forest before her, preparing to move forward in a new direction. What I keep seeing is her heavy, long cloak she carries on her shoulders. It looks like this cloak would weigh her down as she starts on her journey and I think, wouldn’t it be so much easier for her if she removed her cloak before heading out?

Then I realize, this cloak could be important to her success on the road she is about to embark on. She may not need it right away, but as she moves deeper into the woods, it could keep her warm and protect her from the harsh elements she may endure.

This cloak represents our past years of preparation filled with moments of joy, sorrow, laughter, tears, strength, struggle, healing, and pain. It bears life’s lessons and discoveries learned along the way that have made us who we are today.

Every moment we’ve walked through in life prepared us for the moment before us now.  God’s placed this cloak on us because we ARE ready for all that is set before us.

The saying goes, “Your past does not define you,” but God is saying your past equips you and makes you who you are. It’s preparation for each new change, situation, challenge, and opportunity that comes your way.

I’m reminded of this verse as Joshua was stepping into a new position, God said, “This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). I can only imagine the doubt and fear Joshua faced as he took over Moses’ position of leadership, but he didn’t hesitate. Everything Joshua endured in his past prepared him to lead the Israelites to the land God gave them.

Don’t let the cloak of your past be a heavy burden but a tool to equip you for your new journey. Stand tall ladies and wear your cloak with pride as you move forward toward this next position God has for you and allow it to navigate you through each step of the way.

Are you about to step into something new God has for you? What from your past has prepared you for your next journey? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
